Apple seems to have accidentally revealed a host of upcoming products.
The iPhone maker released a new early build of MacOS 26.7, its upcoming update for its computers. And while the official release notes only indicated it was aimed at adding “security fixes for your Mac”, code hidden within the update includes what appears to be references to a whole host of unreleased products.
That includes seeming references to a new Home Hub, which has been rumoured to be a device for the house, akin to a HomePod with a screen. It also includes hints at other home devices – potentially a security camera – upcoming iPhones, Macs, iPads, a new headset and an Apple TV remote.
But perhaps most illuminating is a reference to a product known as B790, which is believed to be Apple’s upcoming AirPods with a camera. Those have been rumoured for some time – but it has been unclear exactly how they will work.
Now, unearthed video seems to show them in action. A file in that same Mac update shows a man appearing to use the product and shows them in action.
The video makes reference to Visual Intelligence, a branding that Apple has already used for the image and video capabilities that are integrated into its Siri virtual assistant. It appears to be a video to help users set up their earphones, and includes a voice over – seemingly spoken by Siri – telling users that they can use the cameras to “save” things for later.
At the moment, Visual Intelligence is limited to Siri on the iPhone, where it is activated by holding down the camera button on the side of the phone. It can be used to “do things like look up details about a restaurant or business; have text translated, summarized, or read aloud; identify plants and animals; search visually for objects around you; ask questions; and more”, according to Apple’s support documents.
The video appears to suggest that it will work much the same in the AirPods with cameras. Users will presumably be able to activate it in a similar way and then interact with the real world through the cameras in the earphones.
Numerous rumours have suggested that the cameras in the AirPods are aimed primarily at this kind of AI-powered features, rather than using them to take photos and videos. That may partly be a limitation of the fact that the small size of an earphone makes high-quality photos difficult, but it could also be a privacy limitation.
The new AirPods are rumoured for release as soon as September, when Apple will introduce a new iPhone 18 Pro. If so, then they will come amid increasing concern about Meta’s smart glasses, and the way they can be used to take photos and videos of people who may not consent or even know they are being recorded.
Apple is also rumoured to be working on smart glasses of its own. But those privacy concerns have been such that the company has debated stopping them from actually being able to take photos and videos, reports have suggested.
