Pixel Screenshots finally gets the missing organization tools it should have launched with

  • Google has updated the Pixel Screenshots app (v1.26.281.05) to add essential date-range and source-filtering options.
  • Users can now sort screenshots by the specific app they were taken in and combine multiple filter criteria simultaneously.
  • The update addresses long-standing complaints about the app’s lack of basic organizational features.

Google recently updated the Pixel Screenshots app to switch from exclusively using on-device AI to using cloud-based AI for some of its processing. Google wants to win back some of these users, but it’s now doing so by adding more features to Pixel Screenshots, and frankly, these should have been present from the beginning.

The latest Pixel Screenshots app v1.26.281.05 is rolling out to users through the Play Store and brings along the “Filters” feature. Before this update, Pixel Screenshots provided readymade chip-style filters for products, places, promo codes, etc., based on information present in the screenshot, essentially categorizing it.

However, if you wanted to filter screenshots by their own metadata, such as by date, you’d be surprisingly out of luck in an app dedicated to enhancing the utility of your screenshots.

With Pixel Screenshots’ new update, users can now filter screenshots by date range and source. Users will see a tooltip informing them about the new Filters available, with the filter icon appearing below the Screenshots text. Tapping the filter icon will show all available filter options across the Date range and Collections. There are quick presets to choose from, but for the Date range, you can also select your own.

You can also combine the Date range and Collections filters in a single search, and tapping the cross on the filter chip removes the filter.

That’s not all, though, as you can also select Sources as a Filter. This lets you filter by the app you have taken a screenshot in.

The Source filter is inarguably the most useful feature the Pixel Screenshots app has received in recent times, as it will greatly help you locate the right screenshots amid the chaos of your screenshots folder. The irony isn’t lost on us, as Pixel Screenshots attempted to tame the chaos of your screenshots folder with a semantic understanding of your screenshots, but it forgot to get the basics in place for the first two years of its existence. Thankfully, this update brings Pixel Screenshots closer to a complete screenshot organization hub rather than just an AI search showcase.
