MOSCOW, August 18. /TASS/. Commenting on media reports that Moscow and Washington are allegedly conducting "quiet diplomacy," Russian Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov said that as a rule, diplomacy is indeed a process that is conducted behind the scenes.

In a comment to Vesti journalist Pavel Zarubin, he said that the Kremlin could not yet say anything about a possible visit to Russia by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Diplomatic principles

• Diplomacy happens behind the scenes: "Diplomacy is always conducted quietly. If people are talking loudly about something, then it is no longer diplomacy but public statements."

Possible visit by US envoys

• The Kremlin cannot say "anything yet" about a possible visit to Russia by Witkoff and Kushner: "When it [the meeting] begins to take shape, we will announce it."

• Meetings of this kind require serious preparation and coordination: "There are so many questions about this trip, it's not as these are relatives arriving in Moscow from some nearby town. This is a serious international meeting that requires preparation and coordination."

• Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that President Vladimir Putin was ready to receive US leader Donald Trump's special envoy Witkoff and son-in-law Kushner again, but wondered what new proposals they would bring to the Kremlin.

Previous visits

• Witkoff has visited Russia seven times, and Putin has received him on many of those occasions.

• The US president's special envoy last visited Russia in January. Kushner accompanied him then, as he had on December 2, 2025.

• Ushakov described the January meeting between Witkoff, Kushner and Putin as exceptionally substantive, constructive and candid.

• According to Ushakov, it was aimed, among other things, at allowing Moscow and Washington to jointly define the parameters of further action.

• The talks lasted about four hours.
