Salvador heritage week is under way at the city’s public archive, and it is free. Three of the five days are still ahead.
What is on, and what is left
The programme is called Semana Arquivo Vivo Salvador, which translates roughly as living archive week. It runs Tuesday to Saturday.
It sits inside the wider Semana do Patrimônio, the heritage week built around Brazil’s national heritage day on 17 August.
Two days have already gone. Thursday, Friday and Saturday remain, and Saturday is the one worth clearing a morning for.
Everything takes place at the Arquivo Público de Salvador, the municipal public archive, mostly in its Auditório Makota Valdina.
Thursday and Friday: genealogy
On Thursday 20 August, from 9:00 to 12:00, there is a workshop on family memory. It covers genealogy, citizenship and access to civil records.
It is led by Adriana Pacheco, the archive’s archivist and service supervisor. The same workshop repeats on Friday 21, from 9:00 to 10:30.

Saturday: the Jornada do Patrimônio
The week closes on Saturday 22 August from 9:30 with the VII Jornada do Patrimônio. It is run by the Fundação Gregório de Mattos.
The programme includes an award ceremony for mestres and mestras of popular culture. These are the people who carry Bahia’s living traditions.
A roundtable on heritage education follows. An afternoon field class in the Baía de Todos-os-Santos is also listed.
That field class almost certainly needs separate arrangement. Nothing published says how to join it.
Who is running it
The organiser is Secult, the municipal culture and tourism department. It works here in partnership with two others.
One is the Organização de Estados Ibero-americanos, the OEI. The other is Iphan, Brazil’s national heritage institute.
That combination matters. Iphan is the body that lists and protects Brazil’s protected buildings and practices.
Salvador’s historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and Iphan is the agency on the ground for it.
Why 17 August matters in Brazil
Brazil marks a national heritage day on 17 August. Cities build programmes around it, and Salvador’s archive week is one of them.
The date is tied to the founding of the federal heritage service in the 1930s. Iphan grew out of that effort.
Salvador has more at stake than most. Its historic centre carries a UNESCO listing, and its living traditions are protected as intangible heritage.
That is the distinction the week keeps returning to. Heritage here is not only buildings, but candomblé, capoeira and the people who teach them.
How to get there
The Arquivo Público sits in Comércio, the lower town, at the foot of the Elevador Lacerda. The lift ride down from Praça Municipal costs cents.
That makes it an easy walk from Pelourinho. Take the lift, turn towards the bay, and you are within a few blocks.
The building’s normal hours are Monday to Friday, 8:00 to 15:00. General visits outside the week are booked by phone or email.
There is no published registration requirement for this week’s sessions. If a seat matters to you, call ahead.
What to expect if you are not Brazilian
This is an academic and archival programme, not a street festival. The register is closer to a university seminar than to a show.
Everything is in Portuguese and no interpretation is offered. Intermediate Portuguese will carry you through the workshops.
It suits adults and students rather than young children. There is no children’s programming listed.
The compensation is access. You get inside a working municipal archive with the people who run it, which does not happen most weeks.
