Holidaymakers return to gutted bedroom after battery left on charge sparks blaze

A couple returned from a holiday to find their bedroom badly damaged after a vacuum cleaner left charging caused a fire.

Firefighters from Dogsthorpe White Watch were called to a house in Peterborough in the early hours of Saturday (15 August) morning, after the couple discovered the blaze fire had ripped through their bedroom.

Footage shows the room covered in thick black residue left by the fire.

A fire spokesperson said the fire was started by a vacuum cleaner that had been left charging while the couple were away.

The spokesperson said: “A vacuum cleaner was left on charge while the couple was away, which had developed a fault that they were unaware of. This shows the importance of making sure all electrical devices are switched off before going on holiday, especially battery chargers.”
