Former Inspector-General of Police and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Jigawa South-West Senatorial District in the 2027 election, Suleiman Abba, has said he has no regrets over his role in ensuring that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, was declared the winner of the 2015 presidential election.

Abba stated this while speaking with journalists at the official flag-off of his campaign at the PDP headquarters in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital.

He said that despite being denied the opportunity to contest for the Senate under the APC at the time, he remained convinced that his actions during the 2015 presidential election were in the interest of peace, law and order.

According to him, “I stood firm to ensure that whoever won the election was allowed to emerge”, stressing that his decision was not motivated by support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) or its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

He recalled that during the collation of the 2015 presidential election results, the then Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, called him and informed him about the action of former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe, at the venue.

“Everybody has seen when Jega called informing me about what was happening. I told him I was aware of it and that I had taken care of the situation and nothing would happen,” he said.

Abba said he was also contacted several times by top government officials who allegedly sought his cooperation, but he refused to interfere with the electoral process.

“I was called three times by top government officials, but I refused to cooperate. They also called my deputy, and he equally refused,” he added.

The former police chief explained that his actions were aimed at preventing a possible breakdown of law and order, noting that denying the election winner the opportunity to assume office could have triggered widespread violence.

“I know at that time that if Buhari was denied after winning the election, there would have been chaos, destruction, killings and many other things,” he said.

Abba stressed that he took the decision because of the oath he swore to protect the country and maintain peace.

“I told Buhari that I did not do it because of you. I did it because I took an oath, and I must fulfil that oath and the promise I made,” he said.

He further expressed disappointment that, despite his qualifications and experience, the party did not give him the opportunity to contest for the Senate seat.

Abba said his decision to join the PDP and contest the 2027 election was driven by his desire to contribute to the development of his constituency, Jigawa State and Nigeria.

“I want to make a difference. I want to provide better representation to Nigerians,” he said.
