The pieces are in place. Dave Filoni is now running the creative side of Star Wars after the departure of Kathleen Kennedy. Filoni has been bringing his animated Clone Wars and Rebels characters into live-action projects for years now. He’s recruited Hayden Christensen to reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker across two seasons of Ahsoka. He’s found a perfect Clone Wars-era Ahsoka in the young Ariana Greenblatt.
Well, where do you think things could head next?
The idea lurking in the shadows is that rather than just individual characters, actual story arcs from the long saga of the beloved Clone Wars series could be remade or adapted into live-action. Fans are extremely divided about that prospect, but the people most interested in the idea appear to be the actors themselves.
On the Hey Jonas! podcast (yes, that is the Jonas Brothers), Hayden Christensen was interviewed and asked about the prospect:
"I know that Ewan McGregor would love to do more with it. I've heard Natalie [Portman] would love to come back. Sam Jackson. So you could get the band back together.”
No one has been more vocal about wanting his character to return to screens than Ewan McGregor, who would jump at the chance to do more with Obi-Wan through old or new stories. Samuel L. Jackson has frequently discussed the idea that his character, Mace Windu, was not actually killed in the prequels, and has asked repeatedly to bring the character back, even asking Mandalorian director Bryce Dallas Howard to talk to Lucasfilm about it, and it turns out she actually did.
Natalie Portman has “no information” about potentially returning as Padme but says she is “open to it.” In her case, the only way she could would likely be something like a Clone Wars remake, as given the fate of her character it seems unlikely she could get a Sam Jackson-style rewritte.
Finally, there is the 18-year-old Ariana Greenblatt, who would effectively be the star of the show as a young Ahsoka, having appeared in flashbacks in two seasons of Ahsoka now. The only thing she appears to have said on the matter is that she and Christensen “laughed and talked about” a potential series with the two of them. It would seem obvious she would jump at the chance.
There are, of course, many problems with this idea. One is that loads of fans do not like the concept at all and would want The Clone Wars to stay as its own entity, which is already historic in the Star Wars universe. Remaking it seems both unnecessary and like more creative bankruptcy from a Star Wars universe that seems permanently attached to the Skywalker era.
There’s also the fact that the adult cast has aged 20 years since they were last seen in Revenge of the Sith. And this is a story set between that film and Attack of the Clones. Christensen and McGregor, through no fault of their own, may have to be constantly de-aged onscreen for a series like this for it not to feel a little goofy. It’s one thing to do this in brief flashbacks, it’s another to do it for an entire run of a show.
We do not know if this will happen, but it seems impossible to rule out with Dave Filoni in charge and the entire cast potentially on board. We’ll see.
