The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) district committee has ordered an inquiry into a resolution against Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer at the party’s monsoon camp organised by the Thenhipalam panchayat committee.
The resolution alleged that money was being taken in connection with admissions to EMEA College of Arts and Science, Kondotty, and named Mr. Basheer in connection with the allegation. It was presented outside the agenda approved by the party.
The district committee directed the camp facilitator and the constituency committee to investigate the incident and submit reports. Party leaders said disciplinary action would be taken against those found to have violated party rules.
Meanwhile, CPI(M) leader and former Local Administration Minister K.T. Jaleel questioned the alleged inaction on the part of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on allegations against Mr. Basheer and other IUML leaders.
In a social media post, Mr. Jaleel asked why the ED had not acted on the resolution and questioned what evidence the agency required to investigate the allegations against IUML leaders.
He also called for an inquiry into the functioning of ED officials at its Kochi office, referring to allegations that money was being taken to settle cases involving IUML leaders. He referred to allegations against BJP leaders of accepting money to influence cases.
Mr. Jaleel recalled being questioned by the ED, the National Investigation Agency, and the Customs in connection with the gold smuggling case. He said the agencies had investigated the case and filed chargesheets but questioned whether they had found any evidence linking him to gold smuggling through the diplomatic channel.
He said he was considering legal action over attempts to portray him as involved in money laundering. He called on the three agencies to clarify the findings of their investigations.
