Only two of the 31 districts in Karnataka have received normal southwest monsoon rainfall for the period between June 1 and August 20.
According to data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), only Belagavi and Bagalkot districts have received normal rainfall during this period. However, despite falling under the normal category, data reveals that Belagavi received 400 mm as against the normal 441 mm, with a departure of -9% and Bagalkot received 167 mm as against the normal 196 mm with a departure of -15%.
Mysuru district saw a departure of -58%, which is the highest in the State, followed by Vijayanagar and Chamarajanagar with a departure of -55% and -52% respectively.
KSDMA said that from June 1 to August 20, the State as a whole recorded an actual rainfall of 435 mm as against the normal 629 mm with departure from normal being -31% which is classified under the deficit category.
From August 1 to 20, the State recorded 127 mm of rainfall against the normal 158 mm, with a departure from normal of -19%, which falls under the normal category. IMD scientist C.S. Patil said that South Interior Karnataka has recorded a deficit of 40%, the coastal districts 24%, North Interior Karnataka 20-30%, and Bengaluru city 50%.
Meanwhile, Bengaluru, which has been receiving rainfall over the last few days, is likely to receive light to moderate rain in some areas. “Generally cloudy skies. Light to moderate rain is likely in some areas. Sustained winds of 30-40 kmph are likely. The maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 28°C and 21°C, respectively,” the forecast states.
On Thursday, the Bengaluru City Observatory recorded 6.3 mm, the Kempegowda International Airport received 3 mm, and the HAL airport received 9.4 mm till 5.30 p.m.
