James Haskell reveals heartbreaking moment he chose to start father’s palliative care

James Haskell has revealed the heartbreaking moment he decided to stop treatment for his sick father.

Last year, the father of the former England rugby union player died following a battle with a “long illness”, involving complications with his heart and two strokes.

Appearing on the On the Mend podcast, the 41-year-old said deciding to start palliative care for his father was a “very odd thing you don’t think you’re going to have to experience”.

“We’re basically signing for him to stop treatment to eventually die,” he explained, describing the moment the nurses told him his father would not get better as “carnage”.

“We signed it… Everyone’s sad, and then you start having to talk about the funeral.”
