At a specially called press conference, Strömmer explained that one of the two men had come forward to ask him a question at the event, at which point the police had become suspicious, intervened taken the man aside. The man and another man at the event were later arrested on suspicion of preparing to commit aggravated assault.
"The police intervened but in a very calm manner. No one was injured and it did not create any significant concern at the scene," Strömmer said.
Police had confirmed to SVT that the two men, both in their 40s, had targeted Strömmer for their planned assault and had been detained overnight. No one was physically injured they added and there was no danger to the general public.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson later called the event "an alarm bell", saying he was in possession of information about the perpetrators that he was not able to disclose.
