One of the features I was excited to try out on my new Pixel 11 phones is the new Extreme charging mode. Google didn't say much about this except that it should "focus your phone's performance entirely on powering up" to give you "an ultra-fast boost when you need it most."

Given how slow Pixels are at charging sometimes, I was really looking forward to giving this a go and testing it against the good ol' fast-charging speeds, to see how well it performs and how many minutes it shaves off a full charge.

The problem? I can't get this option to turn on. No matter what I try, it's greyed out and remains greyed out. And I am not alone, other Pixel 11 users are complaining about it too.

The toggle for Extreme Charging exists, but won't turn on

At least for some people

Extreme Charging doesn't show up in the Pixel's main settings page. You have to drag down the notifications area, tap the pencil to edit your Quick Settings toggles, and scroll down to the Utilities section, and find Extreme Charging Mode there.

Drag the toggle up to your main switches, and it'll be there, easy to reach, each time you need it. The problem, though, as I said earlier, is that it remains grey and says it's Unavailable for some of us.

Before you ask me whether I know what I'm doing, here's what I've tried:

  • I first tried this on my Pixel 11, and when it didn't work, I thought I'd misunderstood and it might be a Pro-only feature. So I tried it on the Pixel 11 Pro, and Pixel 11 Pro XL. It still didn't work.
  • All phones are on the latest software build CD1A.260714.001.A9 from August 5, 2026.
  • All of them are on the latest August 1, 2026 Play System update.
  • All of them have all of their apps updated, including all the little Google things like Google Play Services.
  • I started with completely empty batteries. I tried at 10% battery, 20%, 40%. Technically, it should work below 50%, but it never did.
  • I have **a lot**of chargers — Baseus, Ugreen, Anker, and Satechi ones that go from 45W (from one port) like Google recommends in its documentation, all the way up to 100W and more. I tried them all. None of them worked.

  • I changed cables. I have a bunch of USB-C cables, from the official Google cable to some Baseus and Ugreen cables that go up to 100W and 240W.

None of this made any difference to the toggle. It remained Unavailable through it all. The few users on Reddit complaining about this are mentioning trying everything too, to no avail.

I went the extra mile to make Extreme Charging work

It shouldn't be this complicated

In my fight against the grey Extreme Charging toggle, I decided to unearth every tool and bit of knowledge I have about Pixel charging, to see if anything could trigger it to show up.

See, since the Pixel 9 series, Pixel phones have required a very special flavor of USB-C Power Delivery PPS to go all the way up to their maximum 37W of fast charging. They only achieve that if the charger can deliver its current at 18V, not at 9V.

Most other phones are happy with ~9V and whatever amperes are necessary to get them up to the desired wattage. Pixels don't let the amperage go that high (they top at 9V/3A, i.e. 27W). Instead, they need a low-amp high-volt current (18V/2A), which only some chargers can negotiate.

So, I took out my Satechi charging meter and I started testing again. I have a few chargers that deliver that special 18V flavor power to my older Pixel 10 Pro phones, but I verified that they also worked on my Pixel 11 Pro and Pro XL. They did. Several of them, in fact.

Yet, despite all the conditions being there for Extreme Charging — a powerful charger that understands the Pixel, a powerful cable, a battery around 25%, a phone with every update installed — the toggle remained... you guessed it... Unavailable.

I even went on and turned off all kinds of optimizations related to the battery. Adaptive battery? Off. Adaptive charging? Off. Limit to 80%? Off. I toggled them on and off in various combos, too, to be sure. Nothing.

I know the feature works because my colleagues Steven and Andy are able to use Extreme Charging on their Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro Fold units, but something, somewhere, is making it unavailable for me and for the Reddit users who are already complaining about it.

I just want faster charging, Google

Extreme Charging, when it's available, should fill up the Pixel 11 and 11 Pro to 55% in 30 minutes, the Pixel 11 Pro XL to 75% in the same time, and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold to 50%. It's supposed to speed up and prioritize the charging process when we need them most.

I'd like to see it working, though, and soon, because it's the kind of feature I've been wanting for years on my Pixel phones. I know I wouldn't use it most days, but when I'm in a rush and I forgot to top off my phone, it could be a game-changer.

I've reached out to Google to see if there's a known bug around Extreme Charging Mode, a geo-restriction, or some requirement I'm not aware of. Meanwhile, I'll continue enjoying the cool new camera features which do work, thankfully.
