Athom has announced that it has officially achieved Matter 1.5 certification for its Homey software component, covering the Homey Pro (2023 — 2026), Homey Pro mini, and the Homey Self Hosted Server. This update brings important upgrades for both native device integration and cross-platform device bridging.

HomeKit Weekly is a series focused on smart home accessories, automation tips and tricks, and everything to do with Apple’s smart home framework.

“Most people already own devices that will never speak Matter natively, and those should stay just as usable as anything they buy tomorrow,” said Stefan Witkamp, CEO of Athom.

What is New in Matter 1.5 for Homey

  • The update adds native support for energy-focused hardware categories, including EV chargers, heat pumps, solar panels, and major appliances.
  • Matter 1.5 is rolling out via firmware version 13.3.0 for supported Homey Pro and server installations.
  • Homey Pro and Homey Pro mini feature built-in Thread Border Routers, while self-hosted instances can integrate Matter over Thread accessories utilizing an available local Thread Border Router network

Bridging legacy protocols to Matter

One of Homey’s standout strengths remains its multi-protocol architecture, which supports Zigbee, Z-Wave, infrared, Bluetooth, 433 MHz, WiFi, and proprietary APIs. Through the Matter Bridge app, Homey allows users to expose non-Matter devices to Apple Home/HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.

Homey maintains direct control over the native device locally, while sharing standard accessory representations, including lights, sockets, thermostats, locks, window coverings, and sensors, downstream to receiving platforms via Matter.

9to5Mac’s take

In an ideal world, all of your devices would support Matter out of the box, but until then, I love products like Homey that aim to bring your non-Matter devices into Apple Home. Homey is one of the few smart home products certified for Matter 1.5. Amazon Alexa is currently on Matter 1.0, Apple and Google are on Matter 1.4, while Home Assistant is on Matter 1.3.

You can pick up a Homey device from Amazon.
