In the State committee meeting held in Salem, the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) demanded that the government waive crop loans and reduce the price of rice, which saw a rise over the past two months.

The committee meeting was held in the presence of State secretary A. Jeevanandham and executive members Sekkizhar, Rajendran, and Vijayagopal. In the meeting, eight resolutions were passed.

The committee said the ruling TVK-led government should fully waive crop loans, given the drought-like conditions and dearth of water supply from the Mettur Dam. The Karnataka government was firm on constructing the Mekedatu Dam across the Cauvery River. If the dam is constructed, Tamil Nadu would not be able to receive water from Karnataka. The State government, as such, should ensure the rights of Tamil Nadu through legal means and save the livelihood of farmers.

Considering the traffic congestion, a rail over bridge should be constructed at Ayothiyapattinam in Salem district. Handloom and powerloom weavers are struggling to repay the loans they received from the cooperative banks and cooperative housing societies. The government should, therefore, waive the interest and the fine imposed on loan default.

Rice price rise

Over the past two months, the price of rice rose by ₹10-15 a kg. Grocery prices, too, increased by 20%. The State government should prevent such price hikes.

Demanding to stop privatising the drinking water supply in Salem Corporation, the committee said private supply of drinking water may lead to a hike in water charges.

Street vendors should be protected; they should not be shifted without giving them an alternative place. The government should prevent police excesses on street vendors, the committee urged.
