Two garbage transfer stations at Thathaneri and Kochadai, built at a cost of ₹19.90 crore, were inaugurated here on Saturday.

The state-of-the-art facility is expected to speed up disposal of solid waste in an effective and hygienic manner and also pave way for clearing of garbage at a faster pace. It would, in the long run, help in improving the eco-system and also improve the quality of air as the garbage would no longer be exposed while being transported.

Inaugurating the station, Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar said the government would provide necessary support to the civic body in keeping the environment clean and green. The project, which was completed under Central fund, would lift garbage swiftly from 51 wards spread across four zones out of the five zones and out of 100 wards.

Corporation Commissioner Gaurav Kumar said the collected garbage would be brought to the facility and compressed in such a manner that what was lifted in about 15 trucks could be reduced and taken in just one or two trucks to the main garbage yard at Vellaikal. Transportation time and cost would reduce phenomenally and the man management could be used productively across the wards.

He said that on an average the two stations could compress close to 400 MT per day. At present, the city, which had 100 wards, lifted around 800 to 850 MT per day.

Welcoming the facility, Mayor (in-charge) T. Nagarajan said the shortage of conservancy workers in many wards and problems in vehicles could all be addressed due to the garbage transfer station.

Located ideally in two points of the city, it should be used to the maximum advantage so that the city would be relieved of the garbage dumped on streets.

Collector Nishant Krishna, MLAs A Kallanai and M M Gobison, Deputy Commissioners Jainulabdeen and Rajaram, city engineer Ramasamy and Mayilerinathan were among those who participated.
