It sounds like a theory that's full of holes. But it appears the secret to maintaining strong bones is… Jarlsberg cheese.
Eating three to four slices of the Norwegian favourite every day is enough to improve bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, the bone-thinning disorder that affects about 3.5million in the UK.
Previous studies have found it may be good for the bones because it is fermented with a particular type of bacterium called Propionibacterium freudenreichii.
It increases levels of osteocalcin, a protein that is vital for strong human bones.
Experts at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Oslo tracked 57 men and women aged over 55 in the early stages of osteoporosis.
Jarlsberg is a mild creamy Norwegian cheese similar to Swiss Emmental with its characteristic holes
The women ate three slices of Jarlsberg – which is known for its large holes – and the men four slices every day for 32 weeks.
Results published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health showed levels of osteocalcin increased by about 25 per cent on the Jarlsberg diet.
In their report, which was not funded by any Jarlsberg manufacturers, scientists said: 'It might be a beneficial part of a dietary approach to support bone health.'
