3 Canadian Armed Forces members injured after falling into crevasse at Jasper National Park

3-person rope team was performing rescue exercise at time of incident, military official says

The Canadian Armed Forces says three of its members were injured last week after falling into a crevasse during a training exercise in Jasper National Park.

Maj. Bradley Roy said the three-person rope team was performing a rescue exercise when they dropped about 20 metres into the crevasse on the Athabasca Glacier.

Roy said the three were responsive and stable and were flown to hospital.

He said it was a high-risk exercise and that rescue personnel were already at the scene in case of an accident.

Roy said an investigation is underway to determine what led to the fall and to make sure training procedures are safe and performed as planned.

Citing privacy considerations, he did not provide details on the injuries.
