“I Just Might,” the lead single from Bruno Mars’s comeback album The Romantic, is at its heart a pop song. The tune, which introduced his first solo full-length in nearly a decade, fits perfectly on several radio rankings devoted to that style, but Billboard classifies the smash more broadly.

The company does not publish any pop-focused streaming or sales charts, but “I Just Might” has found homes on its mainstream radio lists, as well as R&B tallies and rankings that also include hip-hop. This week, the cut extends one of the longest reigns in the history of the most competitive of those genre-focused rosters, tying a former record-holder and moving within reach of several more recent blockbusters.

“I Just Might” earns a milestone twentieth week at No. 1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart this period. The all-encompassing ranking measures the most popular R&B and hip-hop tracks in the United States via a combination of streaming activity, sales and radio airplay – as is the case with all tallies published by Billboard that start with the word “Hot.”

Only five songs in the history of the tally have managed at least 20 frames on top. Bruno Mars’s latest smash is now tied with “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, which also ruled for 20 weeks more than half a decade ago. For several years, “Old Town Road” held the record as the longest-running No. 1 in the chart’s history.

Bruno Mars May Pass SZA and Kendrick Lamar

Another week at No. 1 would bring “I Just Might” level with SZA’s “Kill Bill,” which controlled the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for 21 frames between 2022 and 2023. Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” sits just beyond that hit, with 22 periods in charge of the tally. Mars may very well tie and then pass both of those songs in the coming frames, as “I Just Might” continues to perform well when it comes to all relevant metrics.

Kendrick Lamar and SZA Hold the All-Time Record

The all-time record is much farther away, though, and Lamar and SZA are responsible for the three longest-running champions in the history of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs ranking. “Luther,” their Grammy-winning collaboration, racked up an incredible 31 weeks at No. 1 between 2024 and continuing into 2025. That is nine weeks longer than “Not Like Us,” the runner-up on the historical list. “I Just Might” would need another 11 frames on top to match “Luther” — more than half as long as its already-historic reign.

With 20 weeks at No. 1, “I Just Might” has now spent as much time in first place as Mars’s other four Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs champions combined. “That’s What I Like” remains his only other double-digit ruler, with 10 weeks at the summit. “Leave the Door Open,” credited to Silk Sonic, Mars’s superduo with Anderson .Paak, managed eight. His two collaborations with Cardi B, “Finesse” and “Please Me,” each led for a single frame.

Bruno Mars Rules a Another R&B Chart

“I Just Might” sits at No. 1 on only two Billboard charts this week. In addition to extending its command of Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, the single rules the Hot R&B Songs tally for a twenty-seventh frame.

The track recently reached half a year in the top spot, and now ranks as the fifth longest-running champion ever. The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights,” Leon Thomas’s “Mutt,” SZA’s “Snooze” and “Kill Bill” are still ahead with 48, 34, 32 and 30 weeks at No. 1, respectively.

“I Just Might” can be found on 14 Billboard rankings this frame, and it lives within the top 10 on eight of them. The single settles for the runner-up rung on a trio of radio tallies at once: the Radio Songs, Adult Contemporary and Adult Pop Airplay charts.
