When deploying digital signage across a corporate or retail environment, IT teams often face a choice between buying premium boxes like an Apple TV or saving money upfront with cheap Android devices. The new State of Digital Signage 2026 report from Kitcast provides compelling telemetry data on this exact situation, and the results clearly show that Apple TV is the superior choice for enterprise reliability (especially at scale).

About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers has been an Apple IT admin since 2009. Through his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, a mobile device management system, enterprise grade WiFi, 1000s of Macs, and 1000s of iPads, Bradley will highlight ways in which Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, share stories from the trenches of IT management, and ways Apple could improve its products for IT departments.

The true cost of cheap hardware

For the report, Kitcast analyzes telemetry data from 1,000 Apple TVs and 250 Android devices over a 12-month period. The data shows that the benefit of the cheaper price advantage of a low cost Android stick falls apart when you factor in maintenance and replacements. I’ve got some experience on both sides of this that I’ll discuss in a bit.

According to the report, Apple TV devices achieve a median 12-month uptime of 99%. In comparison, Android devices sit at 96% percent. While that gap might seem small, the real-world time impact is massive. 7 out of 10 Apple TV devices maintain an uptime of 99% or higher, making them effectively always on without needing to reboot, etc. Only 12% of Android players clear that same bar, and nearly a third of them actually fall below 95% uptime.

Reliability issues compound quickly for IT teams managing large environments. The data reveals that an average Android device goes offline 15.2 times a year, requiring IT involvement. An Apple TV only has, on average, 5.3 offline events a year.

Hardware failures are also far more common on the Android side. Kitcast found that Android devices have an annual replacement rate of 18%. Apple TV devices are replaced at a rate of just 2%.

9to5Mac’s take

Right now, I manage an Android-based digital signage display. I transitioned from an inheritated Firestick deployment with a vendor and am leasing dedicated boxes from the vendor. It’s Android-based, but you’d never know it unless you watched the boot-up. I love it being a single-purpose device, but I have experienced some of the issues. Most of them need to be rebooted here and there. In fact, the vendor can reboot them daily on a schedule. It’s not an HDMI issue either. It’s some sort of memory leak or something.

With zero-touch deployment and robust management, Apple TV continues to prove itself as an enterprise-grade appliance. The recent price hike for Apple TV was brutal, and I’d love to see Apple release a low-cost “stick” option to meet enterprise digital signage needs. The Apple TVs I manage via device management are really fantastic to use. The recent price increase hurts, but the data shows that regarldess of the price increase, an Apple TV is still a great digital signage tool.
