Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation on Saturday triggered a wave of reactions online, with supporters of the protests celebrating the move through memes and political commentary.

Pradhan resigned after weeks of youth demonstrations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar led by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign, with protesters demanding his removal over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations.

Minutes after Pradhan announced his resignation, the CJP wrote on social media: “Cockroaches won…democracy won! Jai Hind.”

Over the past week, dark humour has been one of the defining features of the protests with young persons turning moments of confrontation with security personnel into memes.

Some users joked that Pradhan’s LinkedIn profile would now show the “Open to Work” banner.

Others posted videos of themselves dancing and celebrating after the resignation.

Some comedians joked that Nitin Gadkari, the Union transport minister, could be the next focus of protests, referencing recent criticism of the Union government’s ethanol-blended petrol policy.

Others posted parody videos imagining what Prime Minister Narendra Modi might say next, referring to his social media messages from the past two days addressing young people.
