A court in Bihar’s Patna remanded Janshakti Janata Dal chief Tej Pratap Yadav to 14 days’ judicial custody on Sunday after he was arrested in connection with violent protests against alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, reported The Indian Express.

The demonstration in Patna was held on Saturday in solidarity with the youth agitation in Delhi to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged paper leaks. Pradhan resigned later on Saturday.

During the protest in Patna, demonstrators allegedly threw stones at police personnel and vandalised vehicles.

Tej Pratap Yadav, the son of former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal president Lalu Prasad Yadav, had joined demonstrators near Gandhi Maidan. He was detained from the protest site and released later.

However, in the evening, the police arrested him from a mall in central Patna, reported The Indian Express.

Tej Pratap Yadav was produced before a judicial magistrate shortly after midnight, according to the newspaper. Following the remand order, he was shifted to Beur Central Jail.

“We would file a regular bail application on Monday,” the newspaper quoted Tej Pratap Yadav’s lawyer as saying.

In the first information report registered against him, Tej Pratap Yadav has been accused of rioting, assaulting police personnel, damaging a police vehicle, obstructing public servants from discharging their duties and injuring a station house officer, The Indian Express reported.

He has also been charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section relating to attempt to murder.

Meanwhile, hours after Pradhan resigned, the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign called off its protest at Jantar Mantar, stating that “all demands have been accepted” following talks with the Union government.
