Teen arrested after doing burnouts holding a machete live on TikTok

A teenager has been arrested in Auckland after allegedly livestreaming himself doing burnouts while brandishing a machete.

Police say the 18-year-old came to their attention on Sunday night after a member of the public saw the livestream and reported it.

The man was allegedly doing burnouts in the Titirangi town centre, in west Auckland, and streaming it live on the social media platform TikTok.

Police say his BMW was spotted shortly after and ordered to stop.

Senior Sergeant Jon Winthrop said when officers went to speak with the car's occupants "they were met by the unmistakable smell of cannabis."

He said a search located over 100 grams of cannabis packaged into bags and 18 capsules of cannabis oil.

The machete allegedly shown in the livestream was also found, as well as a 30cm-long knife.

The driver was arrested and taken into custody and found to be holding a "significant" quantity of cash.

He was charged with possessing offensive weapons and possessing cannabis and cannabis oil for supply.

"This was a dangerous, attention-seeking stunt that revealed deeper levels of offending," Winthrop said.
