SEOUL, July 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's science ministry and the U.S. chip giant AMD Inc. have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to cooperate in the establishment of an open-weight artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, the science ministry said Monday.

The deal, made on the sidelines of President Lee Jae Myung's visit to San Francisco last week, comes amid a shift in the competitive landscape for global AI infrastructure, the science ministry said.

Following the MOU, the two sides will first work to build and demonstrate a heterogeneous AI computing infrastructure that combines AMD's central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) with domestically produced neural processing units (NPUs).

The U.S. chipmaker also plans to push for the establishment of the "AI Center of Excellence" in South Korea, which will serve as a hub for technical collaboration among local companies, universities and research labs.

The two sides will also join hands to nurture talent in AI and work together in the joint research and technological collaboration of next-generation AI technologies, including physical AI, the ministry added.
