Every once in a while, someone online will go, “Hey, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was pretty rad. They should’ve done another one.” Along with being just plain true, it’s a statement that elicits heartbreak for those who like the movie because not only did it fail at the box office, Paramount’s got no interest in doing another one, even if the team behind it does.

At San Diego Comic-Con, co-writer/co-director Jonathan Goldstein revealed he and co-writers Michael Gilio and Johnathan Francis Daley wrote a script for a hypothetical sequel. That script is, according to him, “something we think fans would like,” but as he told ScreenRant, it’s unlikely to ever happen for “a number of financial reasons.”

Said reasons probably go beyond fizzling theatrically with $208.2 million worldwide against a $150 million budget. Paramount’s currently in the middle of an attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery which, while halted until next year, is still a pricey endeavor. And in the background of that merger, it’s been securing deals with several filmmakers (and Travis Scott), either to pick up their films or create new installments of franchises it owns and wants to make theatrical juggernauts. (Case in point: Goldstein and Daley are currently writing a new Star Trek movie.)

Even with the sequel nixed, it seems there’s still interest in bringing Dungeons & Dragons to screens. A TV spinoff was announced for Paramount+ back in 2022, only for the streamer to ditch those plans two years later. No one seemed to bite at the chance to snatch it up, but given how IP-brained the entertainment industry is, it’s only a matter of time before someone takes another roll at adapting this without having to tape over the branding.
