The State committee of the Mahila Morcha has filed a police complaint against transgender make-up artist and social media influencer Jaanmoni Das, alleging that she made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi while commenting on the recent protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
The complaint was submitted by Mahila Morcha State president Navya Haridas to District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) A.P. Shoukathali on Monday (July 27).
The complainants alleged that Ms. Das had publicly insulted the Prime Minister and his mother. Ms. Haridas also announced the Morcha’s plan to lodge similar complaints at police stations across the State.
Following public outrage, Ms. Das tendered an apology in a video posted on Instagram, saying that she had no intention of hurting anyone’s sentiments. She claimed that she had been unable to express herself properly in Malayalam while speaking to the media and had never imagined that her remarks would trigger a controversy.
Meanwhile, Mahila Morcha leaders rejected Ms. Das’s apology, saying that the controversy could not be attributed solely to a language barrier. They maintained that an apology issued after making ‘crude’ remarks was insufficient, given the seriousness of the issue.
