Monday mornings suck. But for a lot of Xbox players, this particular morning has been extra bad. A large-scale Xbox server outage has kept players from logging in, accessing their library, or even launching and playing a digital game. It’s a reminder of what things will be like once everything goes digital and access to all your games is locked behind a server check.

Xbox players began reporting the issues on early July 27. The Xbox server status page, as of 9:40 a.m. ET, shows that multiple parts of the Xbox network are completely down. A few hours after the outage began, at 7:54 a.m. EST, the official Xbox support account tweeted out an update that didn’t offer much good news for players who were hoping to play some games this morning.

“Just checking in on the game library, sign-in, and game launch issue,” said Xbox support. “We know this has been going on a while and appreciate your patience while our teams keep working on it. Watch here or at support.xbox.com for updates.”

In the comments below that update, people are understandably upset about the situation. Some are actively demanding compensation and reporting that Xbox has been down for them since 2 a.m. EST. Others are asking if Xbox laid off the people responsible for keeping the servers running. And of course, there are some suggesting they’ll hop to PS5 as a result of this outage, which is funny considering the PlayStation Network collapsed last week.

During that outage and this new Xbox fiasco, some players and online commentators pointed out that as Sony kills physical discs in 2028 and games like Grand Theft Auto VI skip discs altogether, this is a preview of the future. If the Xbox or PlayStation servers go down for a few hours and the next generation of consoles is completely digital, well, sitting around and yelling at a support account is about all folks will be able to do.
