Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted and destroyed several drones launched by Iranian-backed Iraqi militias on Monday in the kingdom’s first direct military response to such attacks from Iraq since the U.S.-Iran cease-fire collapsed.

The Saudi defense ministry said the drones had targeted petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh regions.

“These terrorist attempts were launched from Iraqi territory and executed by Iranian-affiliated terrorist militias,” the ministry said, prompting Saudi officials to demand that Baghdad prevent its territory from being used to launch missiles.

The latest episode pulls Saudi Arabia deeper into the expanding regional conflict. It comes after Houthi rebels in Yemen declared a blockade against the kingdom along the Red Sea and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

Although Iraqi-based militias have not publicly claimed responsibility for attacks since hostilities resumed this month, Gulf states had previously reported intercepting incoming fire from proxy groups during the early phase of the war.

Separately, Houthi rebels said on Monday that they had targeted crude oil supplies and transport routes linking Saudi Arabia’s eastern fields to the Red Sea hub of Yanbu using several drones. The Saudi defense ministry has not yet addressed that claim.

The Houthis form part of Iran’s broader “axis of resistance” alongside Iraqi factions, Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The wider region remained on edge on Monday as Jordan and Israel said they had intercepted incoming drones. Israeli officials said two drones had been intercepted near the Jordanian border and that the authorities were investigating where they had been launched from.

The fresh strikes follow a two-week stretch during which Iran targeted sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan in response to daily American air raids. Direct strikes have cooled over the past 48 hours, with the Pentagon halting its bombardment after 13 consecutive nights and no new reports of Iranian attacks against neighboring states.
