A little girl and her father were forced to have their limbs amputated after a horrific crash involving a quad bike and van, a court has heard.

The van driver appeared in court on Monday charged with causing grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

The defendant, Brannon Mullan, 36, from Shanmullagh Park, in Draperstown, Northern Ireland, also stands accused of driving after consuming excess alcohol, having an incorrect registration mark and failing to notify ownership of the vehicle.

He has been refused bail after a father and daughter sustained 'serious, life-changing injuries' in the two-vehicle collision.

The eight-year-old had her leg amputated following the crash, which occurred on Edergole Road near Omagh on Saturday, July 25.

Meanwhile her father, a man in his 40s, had his foot amputated after a quad bike was reportedly flipped on its side in the incident.

Police found the pair lying in the road with severe lower limb injuries, an officer told Enniskillen Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He said officers saw a damaged white van and a quad bike flipped on its side.

'It was clear the victims had suffered life changing injuries. Both have since had amputations,' he said.

'The man has had an amputation below his ankle and the child has had an amputation below her knee.'

The BBC reports that witnesses told police they saw the front passenger seat of the van alight shortly after the crash.

The police objected in court to Mullan being granted bail as the officer alleged that the defendant 'inexplicably tried to set fire to his van'. Police also claimed Mullan was the only person to have access to the vehicle.

A detective told the hearing that Mullan was already on bail in relation to a separate case at Crown court at the time of the crash, adding that he had a limited criminal record.

Mullan's defence solicitor said what happened was a 'tragic accident' but that he made no effort to flee the scene and 'accepted being the driver of the vehicle' in an interview.

The defence solicitor urged the court to grant bail and submitted strict conditions to be imposed to manage the risk.

District Judge Alana McSorley said, addressing Mullan directly: 'You are currently on bail which you have breached by consuming alcohol.

'You then made a further decision to drive while under the influence and as result of this incident there have been serious, life-changing injuries to both a child and her father.

'Your actions post-incident cause me concern and you face a charge of perverting the course of justice. I'm not satisfied risks can be managed and bail is refused.'

Mullan, whose defence solicitor described him as a new father and sole provider for his family as a groundsman in Cookstown, was remanded in custody and will appear at Omagh Magistrates Court via video link on August 18.

Chief Inspector McConville, of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, said on Sunday: 'Police received a report at approximately 7.05pm on Saturday, 25th July of a collision involving a Peugeot Partner van and quad bike on the Edergole Road.

'Officers attended, alongside colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

'A man, aged in his 40s, and eight-year-old female child, both sustained serious injuries, and were taken onward to hospital for further treatment.

'The driver of the van, a 26-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of offences including driving with excess alcohol in breath, and causing grievous bodily injury by driving carelessly with excess alcohol.

'He remains in custody at this time as our enquiries continue into the circumstances of what happened.

'The road which was closed for a time to allow for further enquiries, has now been fully reopened.'
