After several years directing blockbuster monster movies, Adam Wingard is returning to his horror roots with Onslaught, and the film’s latest trailer promises an explosive blend of creature feature, military thriller and all-out action.
The new footage follows Adria Arjona as a former Army sniper living a quiet life with her young daughter in a remote trailer park. That peace is shattered when a squad of genetically engineered super soldiers escapes from a secret military facility, forcing her to use every survival skill she has to protect her family while heavily armed mercenaries race to contain the deadly threat.
Arjona leads an ensemble cast that includes Dan Stevens, reuniting with Wingard after The Guest and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Rebecca Hall, Drew Starkey, Michael Biehn, Eric Wareheim, Reginald VelJohnson and former UFC champion Alex Pereira also feature, with Pereira portraying the film’s imposing antagonist known as “The Butcher.”
Wingard co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Simon Barrett, continuing a creative partnership that produced cult favourites including You’re Next and The Guest. The filmmaker has described Onslaught as an opportunity to return to the kind of original genre filmmaking that launched his career before he moved into franchise blockbusters.
The trailer made its public debut following A24’s Comic-Con presentation, where Wingard and members of the cast previewed the film during a panel celebrating the studio’s upcoming slate. The presentation positioned Onslaught as one of A24’s biggest theatrical releases of the year.
Onslaught arrives in cinemas on September 4.
