Alex Eala, Felix Auger-Aliassime set for US Open mixed doubles

MANILA, Philippines–Alex Eala will team up with Canadian world No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime in a star-studded US Open mixed doubles event next month at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York.

The Filipino-Canadian tandem is part of a high-profile cast headlined by the duo of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka.

The initial list of 16 teams entered into the mixed doubles championship was announced on Monday.

Ever since the tournament underwent big changes beginning last year, including dangling a hefty $1 million prize to encourage the top singles players to compete, the sport’s biggest draws have come out to play.

There are still, however, some exceptions, with world No. 1 Jannik Sinner not part of the tournament for the second straight year. He withdrew from the event last year due to an illness.

Sinner’s rival, Carlos Alcaraz, is also out as he continues to recover from a right wrist injury he sustained last April in the first round of the Barcelona Open.

Still, there won’t be a shortage of star power and intrigue this year with Djokovic and Sabalenka joining forces for the first time. Last year’s runner-up Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud are also running it back, while Italian doubles specialists Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori go for a third consecutive crown.

The duo of Eala and Auger-Aliassime is also an interesting team, with Eala a massive draw and Auger-Aliassime’s continued ascent as one of the best men’s players today.

The 21-year-old Eala is also seeing action in the main draw of the US Open singles tournament.

Eala begins her US Open swing early Wednesday (Manila time) in the Mubadala DC Open round of 32 in Washington, DC against Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen.

She received a wild card entry in doubles with Venus Williams, but she opted pulled out at the last minute to focus on her singles campaign.
