The White House has fired back at rocker John Mellencamp after he paused his concert to mock President Donald Trump.

During his show Saturday in Holmdel, New Jersey, the eighties icon was in the middle of performing his 1983 hit “Pink Houses” — which is famously a critique of the American Dream — when he took a moment to poke fun at Trump’s efforts to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

On Monday, White House spokesperson Davis Ingle said in a statement shared with Fox News Digital: “Nobody in their right mind cares what out-of-touch, woke Hollywood celebrities have to say.”

Mellencamp, 74, had been singing the third verse to the cynical anthem when he stopped to make the jab.

“Well, there’s people and more people/ What do they know, know, know?/ Go to work in some high rise/ And vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico,” he sang, then saying, “Wait a minute.”

“The Gulf of Mexico? Is that right? It’s not the Gulf of America?” Mellencamp said sarcastically as his band continued to play behind him. “What a stupid f***ing idea.”

He then picked back up and finished the song.

Representatives for Mellencamp did not immediately return The Independent’s request for comment.

The “Jack & Diane” singer, who lives in Indiana, is currently on his Dancing Words tour. His next show is set for Wednesday in Virginia, and the U.S. summer amphitheatre run is booked through the end of September.

Mellencamp had made a previous joke about the Gulf of Mexico at an earlier stop on tour, according to the Daily Beast. He asked the crowd, “Is it really still the Gulf of Mexico? They changed the name of it, but I’m not buying it. It’s the Gulf of Mexico.”

Trump signed an executive order to rename the gulf on his first day in office in January 2025, and later admitted that he initially wanted to rename the gulf after himself.

“I was going to call it the Gulf of Trump, but I thought I would be killed if I did that,” Trump said in May. “The Gulf of Trump. That does have a good ring, though. Maybe we could do that. It’s not too late,” he added. “We have the Gulf of America now, it’s great.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has brushed off Trump's move and said that the president can call the U.S. portion of the water whatever he wants. The Gulf of Mexico has carried its name since the 17th century.
