Before 2015, Disturbed was already one of hard rock’s biggest bands. The group was a rare act from that side of the rock genre to score actual hit songs, though few had become massively popular outside the style’s core following.

That changed when Disturbed covered Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” The rendition arrived in December 2015, half a century after the original, and quickly became the outfit’s biggest commercial success. It still holds that distinction today and regularly appears on charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

This week, the smash brings Disturbed to an incredible longevity milestone in the United Kingdom — one the band has never even approached before.

Disturbed Reaches 550 Weeks on One Chart

“The Sound of Silence” returns to the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, which ranks the 40 top-performing rock and metal tracks in the U.K. The cover rises two spaces from No. 11 to No. 9 this frame.

As it reenters the highest tier, “The Sound of Silence” reaches 550 weeks on the genre-specific tally. That means the cut has ranked as one of the top performers in those styles for well over a decade.

Disturbed Has Yet to Crack Double-Digit Rock Hits

Disturbed has only sent nine tracks to the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart throughout its career. The band debuted on the roster in the spring of 2001 with “Voices,” but none of its other hits have come close to lasting for a full year, let alone celebrating 100 weeks or more. In fact, “The Sound of Silence” has spent more time on the ranking than all of Disturbed’s other charting tracks combined — multiplied by four.

Disturbed Has Scored Only a Single No. 1

“The Sound of Silence” remains Disturbed’s only champion on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart. Several other tunes from the band have come close to ruling, though none managed to take the final step to the top spot.

“Land of Confusion” and “Indestructible” both peaked at No. 2. Most of the group’s nine appearances have reached the top 10, including its first several entries. “Voices,” “Prayer,” “Remember” and “Stricken” all climbed to No. 4. Coincidentally, each of Disturbed’s first four hits on the tally stalled in exactly the same position.

“Another Way to Die” also entered the highest tier, spending one week at No. 10 – its only appearance on the roster. “Down with the Sickness” is the only Disturbed track to miss the top 10 on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart, as it peaked in the lowly space of No. 37.

Disturbed’s Smash Has Ruled for Nearly Half a Year

“The Sound of Silence” has spent 24 weeks at No. 1 on the Official Rock & Metal Singles chart. To further illustrate just how much more successful the smash has been when compared to Disturbed’s other hits, even if “The Sound of Silence” had disappeared after those 24 frames at the summit, it would still rank among the band’s longer-running successes.

“Land of Confusion” is Disturbed’s second-longest-charting hit on the roster, with 38 weeks to its credit. “Voices” follows with 26 periods – exactly half a year.

Disturbed Falls on Two Sales Charts

“The Sound of Silence” appears on two other rankings in the U.K. this week, though it declines on both of them. The cover of the Simon & Garfunkel classic slips from No. 78 to No. 85 on the Official Singles Sales chart. “The Sound of Silence” also falls eight spaces on the Official Singles Downloads roster, moving to No. 80.

Disturbed Could Reach Two More Milestones Very Soon

If “The Sound of Silence” can hold on for one more frame on both of those sales rosters, Disturbed will celebrate two additional longevity milestones at the same time. One more appearance on the Official Singles Sales chart will bring the song to 200 weeks on that tally. Another frame on the Official Singles Downloads ranking will lift the cut’s total to 208 weeks, or four full years.
