Jess Hull was spooked. She didn’t realise it at the time; in fact, it took a few months for her to understand just how spooked she was.

Hull clattered to the ground after being clipped from behind by Claudia Hollingsworth in the 1500-metre final at nationals earlier this year.

It was her second fall in months after she also tumbled during the world championships in Tokyo. Two days after claiming bronze in the 1500m, Hull was ankle-tapped in her 800m heat and went to ground. She was reinstated but after having a leg sliced open by a spike in the fall she – unsurprisingly – didn’t run her best in the final.
