As the days get longer and the temperatures climb in the summer months, my fragrance wardrobe naturally shifts too. Away from the rich, earthy ouds and deep amber notes I gravitate towards in autumn, or the bright florals that dominate my spring rotation, summer calls for something altogether warmer, fresher and more effortless. If you're looking for an affordable option that captures the essence of summer, NYX has launched body and hair mists that are perfect for throwing in your beach bag.

The best summer perfumes conjure images of lapping turquoise seas, sun-soaked beaches and salty skin warmed by golden rays. The scents encapsulated in NYX’s mists promise to do just that but with a playful energy – think creamy coconut, zesty citrus and decadent caramel that hold their own.

I got my hands on two of the NYX hair and body fragrance mists in the height of summer and put them to the test – here’s how I got on.

I’m not usually a fan of sweet scents but this has enough richness to have me reaching for it when I’m after something more playful. Caramel is a note that I rarely see in fragrance so that piqued my attention, and the scent definitely delivers that burnt sugary scent. The bottle offers a generous spritz, which helps to apply it across your body and hair as intended.

As it hits the skin, the mist opens its caramel notes up, and within minutes its base notes of amber and soft cedarwood fire up helping to give the scent on your skin more depth. While I wasn’t obsessed with the initial caramel scent, I was a big fan of the warm, creamy scent it developed into – easily taking you from beach towel to rooftop bar. Compared to other body mists I’ve tried, this one feels more elevated despite its affordable price point. The scent lasted a couple of hours, which is impressive for a mist and it’s light enough to top up whenever you’d need it.

Spraying fragrance in your hair can cause breakage due to the alcohol in the formula, so I would be cautious not to over-apply it through your strands. I found that two spritzes on my long hair was enough to add an uplifting scent boost.

I love the inclusion of coconut in summer beauty, so I was excited to test the coconut cutie spray from NYX. After spritzing the mist, it enveloped me in a gorgeous scent reminiscent of beach holidays – and one that gained me instant compliments. The coconut isn’t overpowering, and combines beautifully with spray’s base notes of vanilla, amber, and sandalwood. Packaged in a bright green bottle, the bottle and scent is nostalgic of the body mists we were once obsessed with in the 2000s, but this time has enough body to stop it straying into the sickly sweet scents category.

Perfect for teens experimenting with fragrance or as a casual summer scent, the NYX coconut cutie is uplifting and fun – plus it has good staying power clocking in at around two hours.

Are the NYX hair and body mists worth it?

At £12.99 a pop, the NYX hair and body mists are worth checking out if you’re on the hunt for a light summer fragrance. For those who like a sweeter scent, the NYX coconut cutie mist delivers this with a holiday twist, though my favourite was the NYX caramelt mami mist as I enjoyed its creamy richness.

How I tested

When testing each spray, I considered the scent, staying power and value for money. I noted how it felt on my body and hair after applying each how intended and considered who would best suit the fragrance of each mist.
