The husband of a woman who was murdered in a Scottish cottage had been charged with assaulting her weeks before her death.

Stacy Mair, 35, was found dead in a cottage within the village of Houston in Renfrewshire at about 7.50am on Monday.

Her husband Jim Mair, 43, was also found dead at the property, with his death being treated as unexplained.

Police Scotland’s major investigation team is looking into the incident and the area around the cottage has been sealed off.

Jim Mair had appeared at Paisley Sheriff Court on 6 July charged with assaulting the 35-year-old mother.

The Scottish Sun reported he was granted bail on condition he did not approach her.

Officers had gone to the address in the Corsliehill Road area of Houston following reports of concern for a person.

The pair were married in 2019 and Jim Mair ran a tree removal company called TRS Tree Management.

Ms Mair, who was from Falkland in Fife, had also been a director of the company but she resigned from the role in January.

Police said her death is being treated as murder while Jim Mair’s death remains unexplained.

The force said there is nothing to suggest anyone else is at risk of harm in connection with the incident.

There has been a large police presence at the scene while investigations are carried out.

Detective Chief Inspector Laura Young, of the major investigation team, said: “Our thoughts remain with the families of those affected by this incident.

“They are understandably devastated and we are providing them with support through specialist officers at this incredibly difficult time.”
