I love the subreddit r/whatisit for a couple of reasons. It's a fun way to let people use their extremely niche knowledge to identify the unusual items people come across, but mainly it's chance to see paranoid parents and insecure partners snoop around in their loved ones' stuff and find what they always assume are drugs, drug-related accessories, or sex toys.

Occasionally, the things they find are drugs or sex toys—but usually it's something benign that they could have simply asked their child/partner about instead of showing it to thousands of strangers first. The lesson? Stop snooping! Start communicating!

Today I thought I'd present my own version of r/whatisit with a quiz I'll cleverly call: What is it? I dug through the inventories of a bunch of videogame characters, found some weird-looking things, and now I need you to identify them. Is it a quest item? Is it a weapon? Or, y'know, is it drugs or a sex toy? Let us know how you did in the comments.

Chris started playing PC games in the 1980s, started writing about them in the early 2000s, and (finally) started getting paid to write about them in the late 2000s. Following a few years as a regular freelancer, PC Gamer hired him in 2014, probably so he'd stop emailing them asking for more work. Chris has a love-hate relationship with survival games and an unhealthy fascination with the inner lives of NPCs. He's also a fan of offbeat simulation games, mods, and ignoring storylines in RPGs so he can make up his own.
