Japanese power firm execs visit Wawa pumped storage project

Prime Infra and subsidiary Olympia Violago Water & Power Inc. (OVWPI) hosted executives from Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (KANSAI), Japan’s second-largest electric power company, for a visit to the Wawa pumped storage hydropower project in Rizal province.

Prime Infra president and CEO Guillaume Lucci welcomed KANSAI Hydropower Division General Manager Yuichi Yamane and Hydropower Division Development Department General Manager Koichi Ohta.

The visit followed an agreement signed by KANSAI to acquire a 14 percent equity interest in PMJVCo Holdings, Inc. (PMJVCo), the parent company of OVWPI, owner and operator of the Wawa project.

KANSAI operates four pumped storage hydropower plants in Japan with a combined capacity of 4,884 megawatts.

The Wawa project is set for completion in 2030. Once operational, the facility will deliver 600 MW of generating capacity and 6,000 MWh of energy storage, serving as a critical backbone for grid stability and renewable energy integration in the Philippines.

The Wawa project forms part of the total 2GW pumped storage portfolio of Prime Infra. Both are certified Energy Projects of National Significance by the Philippine government.
