Lapu-Lapu City installs air quality monitoring system at City Hall

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu — The Lapu-Lapu City Government has installed PM10 air quality monitoring equipment at City Hall to support environmental management efforts.

A collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) Region 7, led by Regional Director Atty. John Edward Ang, made the installation possible.

The project forms part of the environmental initiatives of Mayor Cindi King-Chan and the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) to improve air quality monitoring.

The PM10 monitoring system measures the concentration of particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers or smaller in the atmosphere.

These particles commonly come from road dust, construction activities, industrial emissions, open burning, and vehicle exhaust. Prolonged exposure to these particles may pose health risks, particularly to the respiratory system, CENRO said.

The Lapu-Lapu City Information Office, in its post, said that the monitoring station will generate baseline data on air quality.

This will allow authorities to monitor long-term environmental trends and identify possible sources of air pollution. It will further support evidence-based planning and policy.

The city government also announced that they will install an E-BAM monitoring unit. This will complement the PM10 equipment by providing continuous and automated air quality measurements.

The enhanced monitoring system will help evaluate environmental management programs and guide interventions to improve air quality in Lapu-Lapu City.
