A bamboo planting drive was organised at the Sri Vishweswara temple at Yakkara here on Wednesday as part of an environmental restoration initiative.

The temple Vignjanodhaya Sabha organised the restoration programme in association with Beehaven Farmers Producer Company.

Palakkad municipal chairperson P. Smithesh inaugurated the event by planting a bamboo sapling. He said bamboo cultivation could help maintain microclimates and support efforts to address climate change. He stressed the need to promote crops and farming practices that reduce carbon emissions.

V.G. Sukumaran, president of the Vignjanodhaya Sabha, presided over the function. Veteran environmental scientist K.K. Seethalakshmi and NABARD district development manager Kavitha Ram spoke on the ecological importance of bamboo and its role in environmental restoration.

M. Baburaj and K.C. John, directors of the World of Bamboo, Wayanad, offered felicitations. “Bamboo plays a vital role in maintaining environmental balance by conserving soil, protecting water resources and absorbing carbon dioxide. Expanding bamboo cover is a practical step towards ecological restoration,” Mr. John said.

Vignjanodhaya Sabha officials M. Gopalakrishnan and A.K. Sudhakaran spoke.
