Diane Abbott was once again re-admitted to the Labour Party last night following her suspension over an anti-Semitism row.

A Labour spokesman said she and Joani Reid would be returning to the parliamentary party.

Ms Abbott was suspended in July last year for doubling down on comments about racism, for which she had previously apologised.

The veteran Left-winger, 72, claimed in a BBC interview that prejudice faced by Jewish people was not on par with colour-based discrimination.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Reflections programme, she said: 'Clearly, there must be a difference between racism which is about colour and other types of racism because you can see a Traveller or a Jewish person walking down the street, you don't know [what they are].

'I just think that it's silly to try and claim that racism which is about skin colour is the same as other types of racism. I don't know why people would say that.'

Her reiteration of her views heaped pressure on Sir Keir Starmer to take action against her as he did in 2023.

She previously apologised in 2023 after writing to the Observer to say Jewish, Irish and Traveller people experience prejudice, but not racism in the way people of colour do.

Those comments led to her being suspended from the party for the first time.

But last year, Ms Abbott was again kicked out after telling Newsnight what she said had been 'factually accurate'.

Ms Reid 'voluntarily' suspended herself in March after her husband was arrested on suspicion of spying for China.

In March, the Labour MP's spouse, David Taylor, 39, was arrested along with two other former Labour Party advisers on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service on Wednesday.

Ms Reid said at the time: 'This week has been the worst of my life. The shock of recent days has been difficult for me and my family.

'I have done nothing wrong. I want to reiterate something very important – I am not under investigation by the police and no accusations have been [made] against me.

'I have done nothing wrong. I love my country. To serve the people of East Kilbride and Strathaven as their MP and the Labour Party has been – and continues to be – the privilege of my life.'

She added: 'Following discussions with the Chief Whip, I am voluntarily suspending myself from the whip... and will not sit as a Labour MP until internal investigations are concluded.'

A party spokesman said the re-admissions were made 'independently of the leadership and political interference'.
