Most parts of the State except western ghats region are likely to receive normal or above normal rainfall in August. However, temperatures may remain slightly above normal in many places of the State, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).

In its outlook for August, the Meteorological Department has noted that coastal Tamil Nadu may receive normal or above average rainfall this month. While interior parts may record normal rainfall, rain may be deficit over those districts along the western ghats. Southwest monsoon may pick up pace particularly in the first half of the month, noted officials.

After a warm July, various places in the State may have to brace for a relatively above average day temperature. The RMC has predicted that several places in the State and Puducherry may experience either normal or slightly above normal maximum temperature this month. Those areas that would record frequent rain spells may register close to normal temperature.

Nights too may be warm and humid in many places as the average minimum temperatures are likely to continue to remain normal or above average in August.

Officials noted that though rainfall over the whole country is likely to be below normal in August and September, the probabilistic outlook shows favourable conditions for wet spells over eastern parts of the State. The western ghats region, however, is more likely to record only deficit rainfall during the rest of the season.

The State has so far received an overall rainfall of 10 cm, which is 18% deficit than normal rainfall recorded since June 1. Many districts, including Ariyalur, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchi, Vellore, and Nagapattinam, have registered a seasonal rainfall shortage.
