Heavy rains wreaked havoc in Wayanad district, with several areas facing the threat of flooding and landslips. With the southwest monsoon gaining strength over the past two days, the district administration on Saturday opened relief camps and relocated people from vulnerable areas.
A landslip damaged a house at Chekkanni Kattunaikka Unnathi (tribal settlement). No one was injured in the incident. Nine people from three families in the settlement were shifted to a relief camp following the incident.
As of late evening, 15 relief camps were opened across the district. Officials said a total of 461 people from 169 families in Vythiri, Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery taluks had been shifted to the camps.
District Collector D.R. Meghashree has urged the public to exercise caution and avoid non-essential travel via the Thamarassery Ghat road.
The Collector said extremely heavy rainfall was recorded in the Vythiri and Lakkidi regions during the past 24-hour period ending on Saturday morning. In view of the prevailing weather conditions, people have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel between Wayanad and Kozhikode districts through the ghat road.
Only essential services will be permitted to use the ghat road until further notice, Ms. Meghashree said. Restrictions will also be imposed on the movement of heavy vehicles and tourists, she added.
Officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and follow the advisories issued by the authorities.
In view of the orange alert declared in Wayanad district, the Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions conducting religious study classes, tuition centres, coaching classes and special classes on Sunday (August 2, 2026). Heads of residential schools and colleges have been directed to ensure the safety of students and may declare a holiday, if necessary, depending on the prevailing situation. Schools and colleges functioning as relief camps in the district will remain closed until further notice.
Meanwhile, the district administration has opened control rooms at the district and taluk levels.
