**Eighty paperless migrants reported since 'snitch law' enacted **

The new "duty to inform" law, which came into force on July 13th, has already led to 80 migrants with no legal right of residency in Sweden to be reported, according to data from the Swedish border police obtained by the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper.

The law – known colloquially as the angiverilagen or "snitch law" – was watered down in the face of public opposition so that those working for schools, health services, and social services are not required to inform border police if they encounter paperless migrants.

The agencies covered are the Swedish Prison and Probation Service, the Swedish Enforcement Authority, the Swedish Public Employment Service, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, the Swedish Pensions Agency and the Swedish Tax Agency.

According to the Svenska Dagbladet, most of the reports have been submitted by the Public Employment Service. The border police did not say if anyone had been deported after being reported.

Opposition ready to vote against new tougher sentences law

Sweden's four opposition parties have said they will vote against a stricter sentencing law set to go before parliament at its special summer session on August 13th, arguing that it is poorly framed and lacks clarity over when the new law will come into force.

If all the opposition MPs are present, the government parties will need all of their MPs to vote in favour of the bill, including two former Sweden Democrat independents, and the Liberal Party MPs standing down, to pass it.

This is because the parliament's pairing agreement to balance absent MPs collapsed at the end of April when the Sweden Democrats reneged on it to block an opposition move to add transitional rules to the stricter citizenship bill.

The Swedish Prison and Probation Service has also said that it will not be able to provide the prison places needed if the bill is fully implemented before 2040 at the earliest, meaning Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer is currently unable to say when the stricter sentencing rules will be imposed in practice.

Among other things, the law will abolish the system under which sentences can be reduced if a person is found guilty of multiple crimes, meaning those found guilty will instead have to serve all the consecutive sentences in full.

In the text of the bill, the government leaves the decision over when the law is going to be enacted to a future government.

'Surprise' slump for property prices in July

Apartment prices fell by 4.6 percent in July compared to June, while the price of detached houses fell by 1.4 percent, exceeding the expected summer seasonal decline, according to the latest numbers from SBAB and the housing site Booli.

"It is surprising," said Robert Boije, chief economist at SBAB. "The price drop for apartments is significantly greater than it usually is during the summer. The price decline in Greater Stockholm really stands out."

The price of apartments in greater Stockholm fell 7.1 percent from June, while the apartments Greater Gothenburg fell in price by 3.3 percent. The price of apartments in Greater Malmö grew by 2.4 percent.

The price of property overall fell by 2.4 percent across Sweden.

**Deadly vibrio bacteria becoming more common **

The vibrio bacteria which can cause vibriosis (badsårsfeber or "swimming sores fever" in Swedish) are becoming ever more common in Sweden, according to the researcher Betty Collin, associate professor of microbiology at  Kristianstad University. 

According to Collin, the bacteria, which live in brackish and salty water, are gradually moving up Sweden's east and west coasts from the Öresund and southern Baltic. They cause vibriosis by entering through sores or through contaminated seafood, and can lead to sepsis, amputations, and even death.

"Sweden lacks a comprehensive picture of where they are and who is at risk of becoming seriously ill from them," she told TT.

She said that warm water above 20C in combination with algae blooms tended to make the concentration of the bacteria higher.

**Captain of boat that rammed yacht placed in pre-trial detention **

The captain, or master, of the boat that rammed a yacht near the island of Tjörn, leading to the deaths of a woman and a child, has been placed in pre-trial detention on suspicion of manslaughter.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Norway-registered freight vessel rammed the yacht, which then immediately filled with water and sank between the islands of Katten and Lövön.

A man and a child managed to escape the sinking vessel and be rescued by other leisure sailors who had anchored for the night nearby. They are being treated in hospital.

The captain's defence lawyer Taavi Tuula said he was not surprised that the man had been held.

"We have discussed this possibility so we're not surprised, even if we have been hoping for the opposite judgement," he said.

The court has given the prosecution until August 14th to bring formal charges.

Social Democrats pledge new queue model for young renters

Sweden's Social Democrats have pledged to bring in a new queue system for rentals of small, low budget properties reserved for young people, meeting a longstanding demands from its SSU youth wing.

"With this election promise, young people finally become a prioritised target group in housing policy. It is a victory for all young people who have been excluded from the housing market," Moska Hassas, chairman of SSU, said in a press release.

Under the proposal, the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket) will be asked to develop a national model for apartments for young people, where small, budget rentals will be reserved for young people.
