Both Houses of Parliament were adjourned till 2 pm after they reconvened on Monday amid a ruckus following demands by the Opposition that Union Home Minister Amit Shah be present for a discussion on the crackdown on youth protesters on July 20.
The proceedings in the Lok Sabha were paused for an hour, barely four minutes after the House convened at 11 am. At 12.09 pm, the Lower House was adjourned again till 2 pm. The Rajya Sabha was adjourned at 11.20 am.
The Opposition parties have been demanding that Shah make a statement in Parliament about the use of force by security personnel against student protesters in Delhi on July 20. The police in the national capital and the central armed police forces report to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Opposition MPs also shouted slogans about the alleged embezzlement of donations made to the Ram temple in Ayodhya.
The student protests in Delhi last month led to the resignation of Bharatiya Janata Party leader Dharmendra Pradhan as the Union Education Minister on July 25. The protesters, led by the Cockroach Janta Party political campaign, had been seeking Pradhan’s resignation on account of alleged irregularities in the conduct of competitive exams.
The agitation in Delhi began on June 6, when the Cockroach Janta Party launched a protest at Jantar Mantar.
On July 20, thousands joined the protest two days after the police forcibly took activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a hunger strike for three weeks, to hospital. Their march to Parliament was met with a crackdown by the police.
Dozens were injured as the police used lathis, fired tear gas shells and pellet guns against the demonstrators.
The police action turbocharged the agitation, which spread to other parts of the country. The Cockroach Janta Party withdrew the protest on July 25 following Pradhan’s resignation.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded that Shah be removed from his post, alleging that he was responsible for “the brutality carried out against students” on July 20. The leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha has also demanded an investigation by a Supreme Court-monitored high-powered committee into violence against the protesters.
Parliament agenda
The Rajya Sabha is expected to take up the 2026 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Amendment Bill for consideration and passing on Monday.
Before the Lok Sabha was adjourned, the Union government introduced the 2026 Indian Statistical Institute Bill and the 2026 Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill.
The Lower House is also expected to take up for consideration the 2026 Supreme Court Number of Judges Amendment Bill.
