Signal No. 1 still raised over Luzon as 'Luis' speeds up near Isabela

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical Depression Luis accelerated slightly as it moved over the coastal waters of Divilacan, Isabela, on Monday afternoon, August 3, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

As of 5 p.m., Luis was moving northwestward at 20 kilometers per hour.

It maintained maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and gusts of up to 60 kph, with strong winds extending as far as 190 kilometers from its center.

Signal No. 1 areas

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remained in effect over areas that may experience winds of 39 to 61 kph within 36 hours.

PAGASA said these winds pose a minimal to minor threat to life and property.

Signal No. 1 was raised over:

  • Central and eastern Cagayan, including Tuguegarao City, and the Babuyan Islands of Camiguin, Fuga and Didicas
  • Isabela
  • Quirino
  • Eastern and southern Apayao
  • Eastern Kalinga
  • Eastern Mountain Province
  • Eastern Ifugao
  • Northern Aurora

In Cagayan, the signal covered Enrile, Tuguegarao City, Peñablanca, Piat, Santo Niño, Camalaniugan, Tuao, Lal-lo, Gonzaga, Alcala, Amulung, Santa Teresita, Baggao, Buguey, Solana, Rizal, Santa Ana, Gattaran, Iguig, Lasam, Aparri, Ballesteros, Abulug, Allacapan and Pamplona.

It also covered Flora, Santa Marcela, Conner, Pudtol and Luna in Apayao; Tabuk City, Tanudan, Pinukpuk and Rizal in Kalinga; Paracelis and Natonin in Mountain Province; Aguinaldo and Alfonso Lista in Ifugao; and Dinalungan, Casiguran, Dilasag and Dipaculao in Aurora.

Track remains uncertain

Luis may make landfall or pass close to Cagayan or Isabela on Monday evening before turning sharply east-northeastward and moving away from the Philippine landmass, PAGASA said.

Forecasters cautioned that the cyclone's track remained highly uncertain and could change in succeeding bulletins.

Luis is forecast to remain a tropical depression for most of the forecast period. It may weaken into a remnant low by Wednesday, Aug. 5, before being absorbed into the circulation of Tropical Cyclone Dolphin.
