The protest call issued by YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and Uravakonda former MLA Y. Visweswara Reddy against the alleged encroachment of a land belonging to a party leader by TDP leaders led to tension in Uravakonda town on Monday. Several YSRCP leaders, including the former MLA, former MP Gorantla Madhav and others, were reportedly either taken into preventive custody or placed under house arrest.

Mr. Visweswara had earlier alleged that the land belonging to the family member of former Kuruba Corporation Director K. Govindu at Velpumadugu village in Vidapanakallu was encroached by TDP leaders. As a response to this, the YSRCP leader, decided to stage a protest at Uravakonda on July 30, however, after the police allegedly denied them permission, he postponed it to August 3 (Monday). Meanwhile, the police once again denied them permission to protest on Monday, following which, Mr. Visweswara Reddy urged the party leaders and supporters to gather in large numbers to proceed with the protest.

When Mr. Visweswara Reddy tried to take the rally from the YSRCP office to the protest site along with party workers carrying YSRCP flags and raising slogans against the State government, police intercepted the party leaders, took Mr. Visweswara Reddy and other leaders into custody, and shifted them to Guntakal DSP office.

The party workers tried to stop the police from taking Mr. Visweswara Reddy and even placed boulders to block the road. The police reportedly dispersed the activists and took the YSRCP leader to police station, leading to some tension for a short period in the town.

A large number of party activists blocked the Ballari-Anantapur national highway for some time, demanding the release of the leaders.
