Devotees of one Dannon flavored yogurt were in for a rude awakening when the flavor disappeared from grocery store shelves without warning earlier this year.

Dannon’s coffee yogurt, known to fans as “DCY,” gained a cult following over the years due to its 32 milligrams of caffeine — roughly a third of an 8-ounce cup of coffee — and sweet flavor that gives a mild sugar rush to start each day.

Doron Zeif consumed the creamy, caffeine-filled yogurt every morning for 40 years, and told The Wall Street Journal: “It’s what I got out of bed for.”

He wasn’t the only loyal fan devastated when shortages of the creamy yogurt started in February. Distraught DCY consumers turned to a Dannon Coffee Yogurt Fanatics page on Facebook to commiserate and plot to convince the company to change its mind. Reddit users have complained of going through “withdrawal symptoms,” and questioned if any substitute could even come close to the original.

“I’m seriously going through withdrawal! Other coffee yogurts are not the same. And making our own version, while healthier, would also not taste the same. I have been having this particular Dannon for literally decades, every day!” one Redditor wrote.

A petition begging Dannon to reconsider had gained nearly 900 signatures as of Monday morning. However, Rachel Acevedo, the president of Dannon’s yogurt division, said the decision was final.

“While we understand the disappointment some may feel, we hope our loyal coffee yogurt lovers enjoy the many other delicious and nutritious alternatives,” Acevedo said. The Independent has contacted Dannon for more information.

However Acevedo gave DCY fans some hope, hinting at a new twist on the beloved classic, according to the WSJ report.

“Dannon Coffee Yogurt will come back,” Acevedo said. “In ways that reflect the taste preferences, flavor profile and nutritional benefits many consumers seek in the yogurt aisle today.”

In the meantime, without their beloved coffee yogurt, DCY fans have gone to great lengths to either secure the few final containers of the creamy treat — or find ways to replicate it. Longtime fan Lisa Signorelli told the Journal that she bought entire cases of the yogurt from her local supermarket to feed her own “50-year obsession.”

“I’d wipe out everything on the supermarket shelf, whatever I could get my hands on,” she said.

While Dannon produces other yogurt in flavors like vanilla, blueberry and strawberry, DCY lovers aren’t interested. “It was the taste, but it was also the consistency,” Longtime fan Marc Hollid-Ausset told the newspaper.

“I’d eat one or two spoonfuls, and then add the toppings,” he said. “It was just the perfect yogurt.”

Fans on the Facebook page have started sharing their own DIY concoctions to try and mimic the special coffee yogurt’s flavor.

“Mix Trader Joe's Organic Plain Nonfat Yogurt with Trader Joe's Coffee Ice Cream. Adjust the ice cream amount to the sweetness you remember. Not exactly the same flavor but texture and sweetness is the same as DCY,” one wrote in the Facebook group.

Coffee yogurt addicts workshopped their recipes under another post, sharing various combinations of yogurt and cold brew powders — though some users noted they have not yet been able to match Dannon’s sweetness.

“Working on a substitute also using cold brew mix. Not getting it right on the sweetness though,” one fan wrote.

Another chimed in: “I make my own coffee yogurt too! I use instant coffee crystals and Torani sugar-free coffee syrup. They’ve discontinued it unfortunately, so looking for a good substitute.” Dannon has also declined to share their recipe with fans.

Others said that since Dannon discontinued their beloved yogurt, they were done with the brand. “I make my own too. I just don’t buy dannon yogurt anymore,” another member of the group added.
