The Toronto Blue Jays entered the final hours before the MLB trade deadline on Monday facing difficult decisions amid a disappointing campaign.

While the front office continued weighing ways to improve the roster for the 2027 season, it appeared to be set on selling expiring contracts for future talent. The team traded away pending free agents Kevin Gausman and Daulton Varsho, and it also shipped off veteran reliever Jeff Hoffman even though he has another year under contract ahead.

Toronto Blue Jays Cut Ties With Jeff Hoffman Despite Public Request To Stay

Hoffman had already experienced a whirlwind baseball journey before arriving in Toronto. He was drafted in the first round by the Blue Jays before debuting with the Colorado Rockies and struggling to meet expectations.

More recently, he revived his career with the Philadelphia Phillies and earned an All-Star bid, becoming one of baseball's most dependable late-inning arms and playing a key role in the Blue Jays' success last season.

Given all of that experience, it was telling when he sent a public request about his status with the team shortly before the Blue Jays game against the Houston Astros and even more shortly before the trade deadline expired.

“Here in Houston, Jeff Hoffman says as far as he’s aware he’s still a Blue Jay,” Ben Nicholson-Smith reported on Monday evening. “‘Let’s keep it that way,’ he said.”

Less than an hour later, news surfaced that the Blue Jays had indeed traded him away.

Hoffman’s request to stay with the Blue Jays had barely been reported before details emerged about a trade that would send him to the Minnesota Twins.

The Blue Jays restocked their lower levels with three minor leaguers in return and the move marked a reunion for Hoffman.

“Hoffman was actually with the Twins in spring training of the 2023 season,” Steve Adams noted for MLB Trade Rumors. “He had an impressive camp but was cut loose from what was then a deeper, much stronger bullpen mix. He latched on with the Phillies, who selected him to the roster a bit more than a month into the season, and went on to enjoy a full-fledged breakout.”

Hoffman has seen a lot of things in his baseball career up to this point, but it was likely the first time one of his public trade requests was officially denied so quickly. And for the Blue Jays, the decision underscored a decision to ease off of contention for this season and retool toward the near future.
