Jardines ending Oxbridge undergrad scholarships to ‘maximise impact’ for more students

Jardine Matheson says it is increasing its ‘focus and commitment’ on the Asian market

Students starting their studies later this year will be the final cohort of “Oxbridge” undergraduates covered by the programme, according to the website of the Jardine Foundation, the company’s education trust.

In a reply to the South China Morning Post on Tuesday, Jardine Matheson said it was increasing its “focus and commitment” on the Asian market and that the decision was made to support the region.

“This change is purely driven by being able to maximise impact for the greatest number of students,” it said.

“As with all organisations, Jardine Foundation regularly reviews its approach to assess whether its programmes and initiatives are fulfilling its objectives as effectively as possible.”

The company added that the foundation was focused on making the best possible impact in the communities where its businesses operated.

The move marks the end of an undergraduate scholarship programme that has operated for 44 years.
