Dermot Mulroney has addressed his imminent exit from Chicago Fire after just two seasons.

The actor, 62, first joined NBC’s long-running firefighter drama in 2024 as Battalion Chief Dom Pascal. It was reported last week that Mulroney will be leaving the series early in season 15, premiering October 7. No reason was given for his departure, though there is speculation that it may be related to his upcoming role in season two of Netflix’s The Hunting Wives.

Speaking at Flashback Weekend Chicago Horror Convention over the weekend, Mulroney expressed gratitude for his brief yet meaningful time on the show.

“Loved every minute of it. Became friends with this incredible crew of people,” he said, according to Deadline.

Praising the “incredible cast” he worked with, who gave him “incredibly challenging scenes,” he said, “We gave it our all for two seasons.

“They wrote an incredible storyline that put me as an actor on [a] high challenge,” Mulroney continued. “I loved every minute of it. Sad to see it go.”

He added: “That’s how meaningful that is, which makes it that much more — I won’t say bittersweet; it’s better to have to leave that.”

News of Mulroney’s exit came after it was announced that the procedural was losing longtime star Joe Miñoso.

Miñoso, who has played firefighter Joe Cruz since the show’s debut, will also be leaving early in season 15.

The loss of both Mulroney and Miñoso has left fans devastated and demanding answers about what is happening with the series.

Mulroney previously raved about joining the cast, telling NBC Insider in 2024 that the experience is “brand new for me.”

“I’m also joining a cast that’s already here. So I’m really the new guy in a brand new experience. I’ve never played a part that will last this long. I’ve never worked on a job for this many months as our filming schedule rolls over into 2025,” the My Best Friend’s Wedding star said.

“It’s rare for me to work on a character where I don’t already know the storyline... So, I’m having the most amazing time in a new process. [I’ve been acting] a long time — it’s so nice to have a new way to look at creating a role, originating a role.”

Chicago Fire debuted in 2012 and eventually launched the Chicago One franchise, which includes Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med*. *

Season 15 of Chicago Fire debuts October 7 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC, followed by weekly episodes.
